Audience Feedback

The questions that I asked people:
1. Do you think that all the three media pieces link in some way together?
2. What would you change about any of the three pieces?
3. Do they give you the relevant information that you need?
4. Do you think the voice over suits the topic?
5. Do you think the are edited to a high standard?

Codes and Conventions of a radio trailer

Scripting voiceover

In this lesson, all three of us sat down and decided where the best place for the voice over would be, and we decided that we would put it over the opening sequence to introduce the documentary, and then we would then collect a montarge of our own pictures that we collected to introduce each of the main interviews, we did this throughout.

Logging Sheet

We have been keeping a log of the different footage that we had filmed during each interview.

Filming: Shop fronts

We went to Liverpool and filmed different but revelent shop fronts in the town centre and these are some of the shops that we filmed:
  • Kurt Geiger
  • Schuh
  • Missie
  • Footasylum
  • Clarks
  • Office

Filming: Stop motion

In this lesson, we attempted some more stop motion footage that we may use for our title sequence. This involved a pair of heels and a pair of Vans. This was good to practice with because we could see the different framing and how much we actually had to move the shoe in order for it to look like it was moving by itself.

Filming: Voxpops and the second Shoe Market interview

We filmed four voxpops in Liscard, and asked them the question 'what is your favorite shoe?'

We then had to go back to the Shoe Market to refilm the parts that werent good enough the first time, but the woman was not avaliable again so we just ended up filming the whole thing again, but this was good because we could use the first filming as a practise run.

Filming: Dr Martens interview

We went out and interviewed Grace from the Liverpool Dr Martens shop, we asked her questions about the styles of shoes that they sell.

Filming: Podiatrist, Shoemarket & Younger Person Interview

In this lesson, we went out of school and filmed Claire, the Podiatrist. Brenda from the Shoemarket employee and Hannah Thomson who was our younger person. We made the questions proir to the interviews, so we could make amendments if the questions werent relevent.

We framed each of these on the right hand side but still in the rule of thirds, as this is the codes and conventions of an interview and made sure the eyeline and lighting was perfect.

Filming: With a shoe designer (Natalie Warren)

In todays lesson, we went and filmed an interview with Natalie Warren-a shoe designer. Whilst here we took cutaways so we could include them in our documentary. We also took pictures so we could show that it was us filming, and showed what the camera looked like that we had set up.

Natalie was set up in the right frame and the lighting was good and she spoke clearly and detailed and gave us all the information that we needed to build up the documentary.

Filming: Interview with older person (Joan Turley)

In todays lesson, we went out and filmed an older person and asked them a series of questions that we had prepared prior to the interview. We took pictures of what we were doing aswell so we could jusitfy it was us filming.

When looking back at this interview, I think that we did a good job, we learnt from the test interview and made sure that the lighting was good and that the interviewee was eyeline with the interviewer. Joan was framed well in the rule of thirds and was positioned in the correct place.

Filming: Test Title Sequence

In todays lesson, we experimented and filmed our title sequence. This will prepare us for when we make our actual title sequence and we will use the ideas that we have used in the testing, in the real thing.

When filming this, it was very time consuming. We had to push each shoe very slightly and shot it, and carry on doing this to each shoe, so when we looked back on the film, it looked like the shoes were walking by themselves. We filmed this a number of times, in different places to see what would suit what mise en scene we were trying to create, this helped us understand and develop what we were aimed to achieve

For the final attempt we did in this lesson, we put the shoes on the table and made the shoes walk in and out of shot. Shooting this has really helped us to understand and develop our skills in creating a good stop-motion video, something we are considering a lot for our title sequence.

Filming: Test Interview

We did a test interview to familiarise ourselves with the equipment that we will be using. This was very beneficial because we could also practise with the framing of the interviewee and know what were doing for the other interviews.

As we can see, the way we had postitioned Don in the framing, we did this well. But the downside of this interview was the interviewer wasnt at eye level with the interviewee, which caused Don to look up. We can learn from this and in our actual interviews we could amend this and make sure that we are eye level with the interviewee. Another thing that let us down in this interview was the lighting, although we did shut the blinds and the curtains, this did not help because we could see on the wall behind the change in the light from outside, we would have to change this and make sure that this did not happen when we were properly filming.

Planning.

We made story boards so we could have a step by step plan of what we were doing.
I drawn single frames of each of the interviews that I am going to conduct.

Target Audience Research

We made a questionnaire and handed it out to 30 people so we could find out what other people who would be watching the documentary would like to see.

After getting people to fill in the questionnaire, we then gathered the results together this was what we found.

.

These are some voice recordings we got off people that answered the questionnaires.

We also took video recordings of people that took part in the questionnaire.

Evaluation of 'Its Good to Talk'

Evaluation of the Preliminary task: When looking back at the documentary that we made, I found alot of things that could be changed and made better these include, ending the cuts too quickly, we should of gave more time, instead of cutting as soon as we did. We didnt include any fade into our work, this would of made it more appealing to the audience and create tension. The rule of thirds was not done correctly as we did not position Beth were we should of she was almost in the middle, were she should of been at the right hand side of the camera when being interviewed. Our song choice was incorrect because there was lyrics in the song, this took away the main image because the audience would be concentrating on the song rather listening to the main topic and thats what the interviewee was talking about. We didnt include the cutaways so it was just one whole boring documentary watching one person, which didnt give the audience enough detail because they couldnt get into depth about what they were listening to. We also didnt have any jumpcuts it just stayed focused on the one thing. The interviewee was moving, she didnt stay still and her eyeline was not correct as she looked in different directions when answering the questions, she didnt look interested, she was also slanted and it didnt look like a professional interview which was not right. The questions were not always clear so we had trouble trying to listening to what the interviewer was asking, we could only make out what she was saying by the reply that the interviewee was saying. The mise-en-scene didnt have any relevence to the interview. The camera work wasnt steady and looked unprofessional. There was parts of the interview were the music was louder in one place than in others so it was very jumpy. To end the documentary there should of been a fade, so the audience new that it was coming to an end and could create tension to finish it off.
